BLACKBURN “WALK THE WALK” TO HIGHLIGHT CLEAN WATER SHORTAGE
Can you walk four miles?
On 5th July 2008 people from Blackburn are taking on a simple task - The Turn On The Tap Challenge Walk - to help tackle the widespread lack of safe, accessible water in the developing world.
Walking four miles is the daily task faced by millions of people in developing countries just to collect enough water - 20 litres - for a family’s basic requirements. Often that water is dirty and unhygienic. The Turn On The Tap Challenge Walk is being organised by Carl A Wingfield of Grace Community Church to highlight facts such as the appalling statistic that every 20 seconds a child in the developing world dies from disease related to drinking dirty water.
Carl explains:
“We want to help tackle this dreadful situation by asking local people – of all ages – to walk four miles and contribute a small registration fee of £2.00 so we can provide safe, accessible water to communities, mainly in Africa, via means such as water filters and boreholes.
“It is very simple to take part – just contact me on 07880 800321 or at Grace Community Church, Wensley Road, Blackburn. BB2 1QD and we will provide details of the route, timings and, if you wish, how to go about getting sponsorship. It will be a fun event, but with an important outcome.
“All money raised will help provide a range of solutions from hand dug wells, water filters and boreholes to health and hygiene education. It will provide safe, clean water and help whole communities. Families will get fresh water to drink and children who would otherwise spend all day fetching water will go to school, thereby helping to break the cycle of poverty in which they are trapped.”
